In the contemporary art world, some artists prioritize commercial success, creating artworks primarily for sale rather than conveying profound messages or content. This trend can be attributed to various factors, including market demands, financial pressures, or individual artistic choices. While this approach might result in visually pleasing creations, critics argue it often lacks the depth and meaning often associated with traditional artistic endeavours.

However, it is crucial to acknowledge the diversity within the art world. Many artists remain dedicated to producing meaningful and socially relevant works despite prevailing commercial trends. One such artist is Hamir Soib, spotlighted by AFK Collection on its website as 'the artist conflicted by the struggle between artistic integrity and the commercial demands of the art world.'

Hamir Soib, as an artist, possesses a keen sense of observation, enabling him to deeply connect with surrounding issues and emotions. He utilizes his unique perspective to craft artworks that convey powerful messages, evoke emotions, and provoke thoughts among the public.

Hamir's upcoming exhibition, titled 'Merchandise,' is set to take place at PINKGUY Gallery in Bangsar on 14 November this year. PINKGUY Gallery is renowned for its museum-standard framing technique, promising a transformative experience through its collaboration with Hamir.

'Merchandise' presents a captivating concept, incorporating clown images and utilizing multiple boxes to create a ‘Cabinet of Jokers’ This innovative approach provides attendees with an opportunity to engage with the artworks in a distinctive and interactive manner.

Each 3 by 3-inch painting is framed by PINKGUY and displayed with wooden boxes crafted by Po'oi, a local artisan. The painted clown images are not cynical but are intended to entertain. Hamir creates these images based on the principle found in the verse 64 from surah Al-'Ankabut, "And this worldly life is not but amusement and diversion."

By integrating political themes and addressing the commercial aspects of the art world, particularly the idea of selling without content, Hamir Soib not only raises awareness about social and political issues but also challenges the norms within the art community. This form of artistic commentary sparks vital conversations and encourage viewers to contemplate the intersection of art, politics, and commerce.

If you plan to attend, exploring the exhibition and delving into the artist's interpretation of this theme promises to be an intriguing experience. 'Merchandise' will be open to the public starting from 14 November until 30 November 2023, 11 am - 6 pm. Contact +6018-288 8868 or email pinkguymalaysia@gmail.com for more info.
